The fee-for-service method of paying physicians has driven up health care costs in this country for many years, according to an article published by The New England Journal of Medicine. In order to improve the quality of health care and reduce costs, the current design of the American health care system needs to be rethought. The fee-for-service payment model needs to move to a value-based one that holds providers accountable for delivering coordinated care, improved quality and lower costs.
